Accreditation of your DBA or PhD: Member or Really Accredited?

I want to take you deeper into the world of accreditation itself what it is, how the process works, and why it matters so much for the credibility of your PhD or DBA. Understanding the mechanics of accreditation will arm you with knowledge that few students possess. You'll be able to spot the fakes, understand the value of the real ones, and decide with confidence.

Good Accreditations to watch out for : AACBSP, ACBSP, IACBE, EduQua & ASIC for Institutes offering MBA, DBA or PhD programs.

What Accreditation Actually Means
At its core, accreditation is a quality assurance process. An external body evaluates an institution or program against established standards to determine if it meets or exceeds quality benchmarks. It's not a one-time stamp of approval; it's an ongoing commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
The benefits of legitimate accreditation are substantial:
  • For Institutions: It identifies strengths and weaknesses, enhances quality through benchmarking, facilitates international recognition, and promotes a culture of quality and innovation.
  • For Students: It helps identify reputable institutions, facilitates transfer of credits, and ensures your degree will be recognized by employers and other universities.
  • For Society: It provides reliable information about educational quality and supports informed decision-making by employers.

The Real Accreditation Process: A Deep Dive
Legitimate accreditation is rigorous, time-consuming, and demanding. It is not a simple transaction.
Step 1: Self-Evaluation
The process typically begins with an extensive self-evaluation conducted by the institution itself. This isn't a casual internal review. The school must perform a critical and sincere analysis of its own activities using external criteria provided by the accrediting body.
According to the French evaluation agency Hcéres, the self-evaluation has several key goals:
  1. Perform a self-critical review of the services provided by the program, including a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats)
  2. Provide a solid basis for the external evaluation
  3. Involve as many stakeholders as possible management, teachers, non-teaching staff, students, and external partners
This self-study report must address specific standards set by the accrediting agency and will form the foundation for the entire evaluation. The report is considered confidential and is shared only with the panel of experts who will conduct the external evaluation.

Step 2: External Review by Experts
Once the self-study is submitted, the accrediting agency sends a team of peer reviewer’s experts in the field who understand both the discipline and the accreditation process. These reviewers examine the self-study, visit the campus (which can include reviewing facilities, meeting with faculty, staff, and students), and verify the information provided.
For a program like a DBA or PhD in business, the reviewers will examine everything from:
  • Curriculum and Teaching-Learning Processes: Are the program objectives clearly stated? Is the structure designed to achieve those objectives? Are teaching methods aligned with expected learning outcomes?
  • Student Pathways: The accreditor will assess the program at three points in time: before students enroll (attractiveness), during their studies (success and support measures), and after graduation (professional integration and career outcomes) .
  • Faculty Qualifications: As noted in the criteria for AACSB, at least half of the teachers in the program must hold doctorates.
  • Research Output: The number and quality of faculty publications are scrutinized.
  • Management and Continuous Improvement: The accreditor will examine whether the program has its own human, material, and financial resources, and whether it has a defined quality policy that includes regular evaluation of teaching by students and periodic meetings with a consultation body.

Step 3: Decision and Ongoing Monitoring
The peer team submits a comprehensive report, and the accrediting body makes a final decision. Accreditation is typically granted for a set period (e.g., five years for AACSB) .
Critically, accreditation is never permanent. Accredited institutions must undergo periodic re-evaluation to maintain their status. They must demonstrate evidence of continuous improvement, showing they have addressed any recommendations from previous reviews. This commitment to ongoing quality is what makes legitimate accreditation so powerful and so different from a one-time "membership" payment.
The Different Types of Accreditations
It's also vital to understand the different levels of accreditation.
  • Institutional Accreditation: This evaluates the entire institution. Does it have the infrastructure, governance, and financial stability to function as a legitimate university?  Regional accreditation is a common example of institutional accreditation in the U.S.
  • Programmatic Accreditation: This focuses specifically on a particular program, department, or school within the institution. AACSB, ACBSP, and IACBE are all examples of programmatic accreditation for business schools. This is crucial for your PhD or DBA because it tells you that the specific business program, not just the university meets the high standards of the business education community.

Recognizing the Members Only Vs The Real Accredited Ones - The Verdict

While legitimate accreditation is rigorous, there is a way to show-case the logo of an accrediting authority by just being a member. The real accredited programs or Institutes will clearly mention the word “Accredited” and their logo will appear sharp and clear. Even the ones mentioned as "Candidate for Accreditation are not Accredited".
